How often should you walk your dog?

The Paw-Stay Team · Pet care editors, reviewed by verified sitters 5 min read

Walk needs scale with energy, age and how much mental work a dog gets indoors. The right number is the one that leaves your dog tired, not wired, at the end of the day.

A quick baseline by type

  • Working and herding breeds: two long walks plus training or scent work
  • Sporting breeds: 60–90 minutes daily, often split into two
  • Toy and brachycephalic breeds: three or four short outings, heat-aware
  • Senior dogs: shorter, more frequent, flat-route walks
  • Puppies: brief outings, several times a day, capped by joint development

Signs the schedule is wrong

Destructive chewing, pacing, barking at the window and difficulty settling in the evening usually mean too little activity. Limping, lagging on the leash or refusing the door means too much.

Covering a long workday

A midday dog walker breaks up an eight to ten hour stretch and is far cheaper than day care. On Paw-Stay you can book one to six walks per day with the same local sitter, so your dog keeps the same handler and route.
